College helped tremendously in building my written and spoken language skills. Without this essential key, you are forever lost in the world of Business. -In many other fields as well. The ability to personalize with anyone, be friendly and outgoing; this probably stems from attending a VERY LARGE public University. Either sink or swim, socially.

I feel this college may have hurt me initially because they have SO MUCH political red tape here. It's all about the rules, none of them make sense or have a purpose, they're there to make your life a living hell, it seems, sometimes. Their political agenda includes feminism, pushing gay pride and acceptance, the amazingly aggressive acceptance of low income and intellect minorities- to over-satisfy and quotas which may or may not exist, rules, did I mention rules (?), as well as many other unsavory issues. Some of this equates to taking a pre-algebra class and having the TAs and Professor being all foreign, and speaking absolutely no English whatsoever. When all 300 students from our class visited the University President to quietly protest, we were blown off. Literally had no effect whatsoever.

At the U of I, I was pre-med for a couple of years, after 2 semesters of killing myself to make B+ grades- on the curve, I noticed my fellow classmates all had the exams prior to taking our exams. Yes, they were cheating. - Around 80% of the classes in the pre-med core was this way. It burned me up and out. I changed majors.

I also had a lot of art classes which was nationally known before the current Art/Sculpture Dept. head got there. Upon his incompetent arrival, all of the talented professors left immediately. So that department is a waste of space. If you are going into art, go far from Iowa. Same foreign issue in their design department as was in their algebra department. This was my only C+ in art, in every other class, I got A+s. The Asians in my class all got As, although their work was mediocre at best.

I am glad I got the education I did. Iowa's English department is world famous, and the core English classes will put you into another league. However, if I would've went to a college with a decent, somewhat permanent faculty, I probably would've double majored in sculpture. If I would've went to a private college where the pre-med classes weren't a joke, I probably would've became a Doctor or Surgeon.

I recommend students looking for colleges to closely review opinions of graduates, the standing of current faculty, programs, their ability to prove that they speak English. Spend the extra cash and go to a private college. They will care about you and not look at you as #345 in a class of hundreds of faces. My largest lecture at IA was 425 students. Maybe someone out there thinks that's great, but it sucks.

I honestly can't recommend IA for anyone other than an English major or Engineering major. A buddy of mine was exceptionally bright, got his Eng degree and now works for NASA, so there you go.
