This school is absolutely horrible.

  • The curriculum is a joke, the highest math I have to take to become a nurse is introductory algebra. There are even math classes offered like where they teach you how to do long division and multiply double digit numbers. The only way you can be challenged is if you take their science courses. I'm currently taking 18 credits just to stay busy, otherwise I'd be bored all the time.
  • If you are a young student, like 18-25, be prepared to be surrounded by people in their late 30s, 40s and 50s. The teachers even tend to focus their lecture towards older people with comments such as "Don't you all remember when you were raising your first child…" It's really hard to make friends because of this unless for some odd reason there are 18-year-olds out there that like to befriend the elderly. As for the few young people that ARE enrolled, they tend to be locals and already have set groups of friends and aren't interested in being yours.
  • The city of Muskegon is TERRIBLE. If you need to find a job, GOOD LUCK. I couldn't even get a volunteering position! No one is hiring, not even the McDonalds. Right now I am living off of a $5,000 student loan I took out for the year to cover just plain living expenses. There are no places such as clubs or gathering places for younger adults. Even the bars are full of old hags. All the food places are closing down because of Muskegon's terrible economy and to go to places like Jimmy Johns you have to go Norton Shores. I still have yet to find the upper class area of Muskegon, if it even exists.
  • I live on campus at the townhouses and I would rather live in a shelter. Campus safety focuses on the most petty things and forgets about things that should really be taken care of. My car was broken in to and it was done right in front of a security camera and all campus safety said was "We'll get back to you," which they never did even after I checked in with them 3 times. Res life makes rules that make you feel like you had more freedom when you were 15 and lived with your parents. If you have a guest they MUST be signed in and with you at ALL times. On weekdays guest have to be gone by midnight and weekends 2 am. If you want someone to stay the night it has to be on a weekend and you cannot have the opposite sex stay in your townhouse; you have to find a "host" if you were to have your boyfriend/girlfried or EVEN you mother/father if they are not the same sex as you. The room assignments are bogus. I swear res life staff is racist. Most of the houses are all african american or all caucasian and if they happen to mix together you will NOT find an african american and a caucasian sharing the same bedroom. There are so many things I could continue to say about living on campus, but I'm just going to stop there.
  • The only 2 positive things I can say about this college is that it is rather affordable for a private college. It cost me $14,000 dollars (that includes my $5,000 loan) for the year and I have earned 49 credits. The only other positive this is that the professors are VERY nice and helpful. If you ask me, most of them are overqualified to be teaching at Baker, for most of them have their PhD or mulitiple degrees. I've never had a bad experience with a professor.
  • In the end I've decided to leave Baker College of Muskegon because I didn't feel like the education I was recieving would prepare me enough to be the nurse I wanted to be. I wasn't challeged at all. I was not a good student in high school and I'm getting a 3.34 right now. I will be attending the University of Detroit Mercy in the fall.
