First of all i will start off by saying that i am a freshman and that I am not in the class of 2011, but '13 was not an option so i picked the closest one. Second of all, I love the university and the people here so instead of just ranting, I will offer all you high-school seniors/ transfer students some advice. If you are not social and/or outgoing, this is probably not the place for you. Everyone is very friendly and especially the first weekend, it pays off big to be as outgoing as possible and meet everyone that you can. The party scene is awesome. period. If you're not into it, it is a little harder to find things to do, but the town and university offer some fun alternatives to getting hammered all weekend. In fact, they're quite desperate to keep students away from alcohol and require you to complete a mind numbing 6+ hour AlcoholEdu online course and listen to the dean rant during orientation about how strict they are about drinking and how "this is a new OU". Do not believe this for a second, or anything else they tell you at orientation for that matter; especially about Learning Communities. As an undecided student, they force this abomination of a class onto your schedule and make you take a "cluster" of classes that almost always have nothing to do with your major or even your interests, forcing you to wake up early and waste time learning things that you will never use. To make matters worse, there is a one credit hour class that is bundled in with this that meets two hours a week and overloads you with busy-work. I am not exaggerating when i say that sitting through this two hour hell-hole of a class borders on being physically painful. It seriously is as if the administration sat down and made a list of all the obnoxious aspects of high school and middle school and combined them into a class that they hail as the best thing since sliced bread. As if it couldn't get any worse, these classes are taught almost solely by condescending graduate students who share a mental delusion that makes them confuse their class with first grade nap time. I literally spent 2 straight hours playing "the name game" during the classes' first meeting while contemplating dropping out to sell meth. You have probably heard that the food is awful and the rumors are true. The only thing i can even stomach is the cheeseburger and french fries, which still makes me feel like i swallowed a bowling ball. The "grab n' go" is an absolute disaster, at least on south green. Aside from the dreaded learning communities, the classes so far have been okay, but freshman english comp can be overwhelming at time. The RAs and police are pretty cool as long as you're not doing anything stupid like walking around with an open beer or pissing in public. As for the greek life, it doesn't dominate, but its a major plus to be in a fraternity/sorority. Although some of them are douche bags/date rapists, they are mostly friendly just like the rest of the campus. One last thing: music/file sharers be warned: if you do so much as open a p2p file sharing program or torrent on your computer, your internet will be shut off completely. I recommend OU highly and throughly enjoy my time here aside from a few grievances. DO NOT JOIN A LEARNING COMMUNITY!
