As an American Studies major, the department is absolutely wonderful. My teachers are open and friendly, not condescending authority figures. They will talk you through any problem, even if it's over the phone on a Saturday afternoon. People are friendly and courteous to one another, opening doors, picking up something you may have dropped, etc. I once dropped my wallet in the parking lot and someone brought it to campus safety (who then called me immediately) and nothing had been stolen. I frequently leave my items in the library to go to the bathroom or say hello to a friend without worry of theft or damage. While some of the intro classes can be a little too easy, I never felt unchallenged in a class. I was able to take classes in a variety of departments throughout my four years and still be able to finish my major on time. I see that a lot of people are complaining about the lack of social life, but I'm also noticing these people are too young to get into a bar; once you are able to go downtown (whether you have a good fake or you are actually 21) there is much more to do, though I never minded the social life as a freshman or sophomore either. Saratoga can be a little isolating at times, but it definitely has it's charm |
