I am an out of state transfer student who came for the Fall 2009 semester. College of Charleston was my top choice, because it was a small school, where I felt like more than just a number, and the city is one of my favorites. When I visited the school last year, the students seemed friendly and they all said the same thing "We love it here!". Once I got here, the College of Charleston that I had had such a good feeling about somehow disappeared. The students weren't friendly and I found myself alone for almost the first half of the semester. Now I'm starting to meet people, but finding people to become friends with can be a challenge if you are a transfer student, since everyone already has their friends. Drinking and partying are a huge deal here, and if you don't enjoy doing either of those things you will have a hard time finding your place. The dorms are also lacking in the social area. You meet almost no one if you live on campus. For the money, you could live off campus. The city of Charleston is a wonderful one, but make sure you bring a car, as you will feel isolated downtown if you don't. The teachers here are very helpful, and really try and get to know the students. While my time here hasn't been great, it has gotten better. My advice to anyone that is thinking about leaving is to stick it out at least a year and then see how you feel.
