I am a 2nd degree student, with a previous degree in the Allied Health Field. I expected to go to nursing school to learn how to be a nurse, which is essentially what I have done. However, I have been treated like a delinquent 5th grader the entire time at Belmont. The nursing faculty is very friendly on the exterior, but most of them are quite self-absorbed and not sensitive to the disposition of the student. Variations in opinion and provoking thought are not cherished in this academic setting. Keep ideas to yourself, and when asked questions just repeat whatever it is they've told you before. If you want to be told to leave your items, drinks, purses, cell phones, etc. at the front of the room every time you take a quiz or exam this is the place for you. They call it an Honor Code here. Professors regularly make you provide your own "cover sheet" for quizzes and exams(even with multiple formats, lol). Also, as an adult learner I would like to make decisions about attending class, btw absences are only allowed with a MD note. And yes there are grades attached to attendance. One day I was sick, so I brought my 3 year old to the campus clinic with 2 trash cans and towels in my car to catch our puke…just to get my note for missing class! Additionally the last semester is consumed with BS classes…only one of which is actually useful. I'm not saying that the courses couldn't be helpful, but I am saying that I spent hours this semester listening to my peers talk about trips to Europe, poems, and art in my Nursing Capstone class. The same class in which the Dean of Nursing proceeded to explain to us that only 10% of people actually make goals, and that we better start making short and long term goals(again back to 5th grade). Make a better choice…Belmont's exterior is nice, but it's not so pretty on the inside. |
