I was right; I applied to GSU with 3.5 and an SAT score of 1220 (out of 1600). I expected a free ride through my major. I thought all I'd ever have to do was cram for tests, bs some papers the day theyre due, and show up to class occassionally. My first week at GSU slapped me awake. I was challenged by the coursework and the text materials, which actually motivated me to at least keep up with the class, and that was when I was just a Business major. I remember being repsonsible for 100's of pages of reading for every lecture, 20 page reports, and managing group activities and major projects. After I switched Biology, a fire was lit under my ass. Every class was packed with 100 students, 80 of which were pre-medical, like myself. The textbooks were saturated with details of research findings, the lectures were equally relevant and focused. Th prevailing attitude waskeep up, or get out of the wayI finally had something to prove. I realized early on that my experience and education from GSU was completely up to me. I could strengthen my weakness with help from peer-led study groups, develop personal relationships with my professors just by attending their office hours ONCE, and walk out a more confident person by the time the semester drew to a close.I have been able to make great connections with my professors, despite being 1 in a pool of 100 students (per lecture). I have saved many of my textbooks because they continue proving to be useful. I was able to volunteer in a research lab as sophmore, conduct my own honors thesis project, present MY research at the Undergraduate Research Conference, do Study Abroad in Argentina for 3.5 weeks, and if I choose to contrinue working in the lab, become a first-author on a scientific publication.In my personal experience, the faculty is amazing one-on-one. All of my professors have been eager to help me get the most out of my education and have opened a multidude of doors for my future. I am very grateful for their support. I used to be an average student. My classes at GSU motivated me to better myself and my situation. Potential means nothing until you exceed it- and I feel that GSU allowed me to look beyond my academic insecurities and get everything I ever wanted for myself. |
