SU was not what I was really expecting, but still maintains some redeeming qualities: The most important thing is first, academics. It is a large university and it is therefore easy for an individual to get lost. Freshman year, I am going to guess, maybe 2 professors knew my name. But once I put in some effort, I started getting a little more recognized. As far as the quality of education, it's pretty good. The intro classes are intro classes and the upper level classes can be incredibly challenging. It's really dependent on what you take.Socially: I've seen that people postLong Island/New Jerseyon their reviews as a description of the people here. It's accurate. No offense Jersey, I've met some nice people from your state, but the girls wearing NorthFace trench coats at SU usually have NJ Plates. But honestly, you can find good people here, I've found many. There is also a huge problem with ego's (myself included). Unfortunately ego's are found at every college or university. And as for SU being a party school: it is. If you love academia the keystone light cans in your hallway will disgust you, but that's almost every college as well. (Hint for life science majors: connect with ESF kids. Some are uppity, but if you love science and want to kick back and talk about C4 photosynthesis, these people are gold).I have some closing advice, and I hope it can help someone. SU has good academics. But it has an even better name (in the professional world and possible phonetically). If you want the name, you will shell out the cash. But if you want the education, look towards a good state university. |
