I believe that this is due to the high caliber of student that is admitted to this university: test scores and GPA tends to be above the national average and this school is the flagship school of Washington State, drawing it's most promising students. Within my department, once I began taking the upper-level courses, I discovered that the professors enjoy challenging you and are generally open to different, and often controversial, topics for research papers, so long as you are able to provide a sound (and fair/balanced) argument. Once students begin the 300- and 400-level courses, they will hit their stride and find that the courses they take will challenge them as much as they desire to be challenged, both in classroom discussions and in conducting research. |
