As others have lamented in their comments, academics are second rate. My junior college years were more challenging than my time spent at OPSU, my GPA skyrocketed after I transferred here. Crime is really, really bad. People are always acting suspicious, causing a ruckus, damaging or vandalizing things. The dorms are bad. At the beginning of the year we were invaded by bugs of all shapes and sizes and they refused to spray until a girl got bit by a poisonous spider mid-year, had to go to the hospital, and her parents got mad at the university. Then they sprayed everything and the bugs went away shortly. Non-college student men are always in the women's dorms following around the women, and women are always loitering around the men's dorms. Small as the college is most people know everyone, and certainly know which men do and don't belong in there. The bathrooms and hallways are disgusting. People just vomit and urinate where ever they happen to be, resulting in it smelling bad most of the time. They only do heavy cleaning when they have future student tours or enrollment days, then its super clean and looks great for a couple days afterward. There are a lot of robberies, property damage, and harassment in the dorms. People don't get along very well, cliques abound, lots of fights, harassment, discrimination. The widespread mentality is Southern Baptist, but not much in practice besides discrimination. There is absolutely NO tolerance for anyone but Christians, and non-Baptist Christians even get flack. Forget being an Atheist, Pagan, Hindu or anything else unless you want to be left out, minus time being picked on. Same for being gay. There is a share of lesbians on campus I know, but most pretend to be straight and vehemently deny it unless they think no one is watching, to avoid conflict. On the scale of what is worse, being gay is probably better well received than being a non-Baptist. Race relations are so-so, I've never seen any outright bullying, but people like to gossip and ignore those in races other than their own. This is a school full of bullies, fair and simple.Faculty are immature. That is the best, most eloquent way of putting it. They constantly criticize one another, their students, staff, anything. They like to blame everyone else for their problems in life and rant about how bad their jobs are. Most of the faculty act like children on the playground if they get mad at someone, they hardly ever are the "bigger person" in a situation they perceive as being against them. They are collectively overreactive. With a lot of different teachers I've seen students make perfectly innocent points, or word something unintentionally awkward only to be blasted by a teacher. I've seen first hand, and heard other occasions where students got so fed up with a teacher blowing up on something minor that they've broke into tears and ran to drop the class, or flipped off the instructor along with colorful sentences to boot. I never seen such chaos, even in the poor urban high school I went to. Students in my high school and junior college years had so much more respect for the teachers than people do here.People get friends, and watch out for their few friends, but everyone else beware. Sad way to go through college, but my way or the highway rules. People take what they can, anyway they can. Students and teachers cannot take criticism, constructive or not. Everyone acts like children, seeing who can shout the loudest or punch the hardest. I don't even know how this school stays above water.Best you can do for yourself is not to go here, and if you have, spread the word and save others from having the same bad experiences so many of us have had to withstand. If you think your grades aren't good enough to get in somewhere else, at least try! It can't hurt, and you might be surprised with the results. |
