I hate Agnes Scott and I'm transferring. BUT, I will try to provide honest advice to those considering it.

ACADEMICS:

I am not going to lie, I have had an incredibly easy time at ASC. My transcript is full of A's and B's and I did homework maybe once a week. Keep in mind, as a 1st/2nd year my courses were quite varied. There are harder majors, but I really didn't think ASC was challenging. My friends at state schools seem to work much harder.

The faculty are, for the most part, quite helpful. However, there are a few bad apples. Unfortunately, because each department is so small, if you don't get along with one professor you will want to avoid a major entirely.

Major selection at Agnes Scott is extremely limited, and classes are poorly planned. You may have to wait years to take a class you need for you major, or you may not be able to finish a major at all due to poor timing. This is because there aren't many sections of each class. Also, most first years think they'll major in everything. You won't. You'll be lucky to get out with one major.

FACILITIES:

The dorms at Agnes are disgusting. Don't be fooled. Sure, the upperclass rooms may be larger than some schools, but do you really want to live without AC in the south? Also, I've visited friends at both state and private colleges and found their facilities to be much nicer. They may lack the "southern charm", but they have AC, nice showers, and full kitchens. DO NOT believe the tour guides when they say the dorms have full kitchens. Laundry is free, which is nice, but the machines kinda suck.

The classrooms are okay, nothing special.

The building at ASC are not well kept, unless they are for alumnae. ASC doesn't really care about renovating the dorms.

STUDENT LIFE/STUDENT BODY:

ASC makes excuses for its lack of activities by directing students to Atlanta. Programming Board tries hard to make campus fun, but people just don't come to events. No one really cares about anything here. Athletic events are poorly attended, too. No school spirit. If you want to have fun, you have to get off campus. However, if you like sitting in your tiny dorm alone on the weekend, you might be in luck.

The students are EXTREMELY catty. You WILL have drama. Although there is diversity, most students stick to their groups. You can be one of the "pretty" constantly drunk mean girls, an anime nerd, black, asian, an athlete, or gay. The only thing these groups have in common is that they are ALL liberal. If you aren't liberal, you WILL be attacked. There is no respect for diversity of ideas here.

THE FOOD:

It's good, at first. Better than state schools, but not better than at the other private schools I've visited. Also, it sucks to think that at 22 years old you might be in a dorm and not be trusted to use a stove.

Another thing…ASC tends to think it's a great, prestigious institution. It's virtually unheard of outside of Georgia. I've been in contact with an admissions officer at a top ranked LAC who'd never heard of it. ASC puffs itself up, but the truth is, almost every other public school in GA has a better rep (and they're considerably cheaper).

Most of the students at Agnes complain about it a lot, which makes the overall environment very negative. ASC is the right place for a very specific type of student. Most of the girls here chose the wrong place because ASC threw money at them. This is why the retention rate is so low. Those who don't leave are locked in because of their awesome financial aid, which is one thing I can say is great about ASC (even if you do have to beg for it). Go visit, and don't be fooled by the admissions garbage - school without boys DOES suck. If you really think it's the right place for you, give it a whirl. But if you are even considering another school (especially a bigger, more prestigious one), go there.
