For all aviation related majors: When I had to decide what college/university I was to go to in the fall, I had a list of those schools that had accepted me including Embry-Riddle, the premier aeronautical school in the country, Unfortunately, staggering tuition costs left me choosing Dowling College as the place I would learn to fly a well as earn my degree in the field of aviation. Dowling College provides an excellent learning environment for those interested in aviation careers with two degrees, Aviation Management and Aeronautical Engineering. The latter requiring a lot of math and technical analyzation abilities. I am a flight student at Dowling and the training is excellent, however the cost to fly is ridiculous.

IMPORTANT TO THOSE INTERESTED IN FLIGHT TRAINING:

Dowling College, like many colleges/universities has several schools (School of Business, School of Aviation, etc.) The School of Aviation is located approximately 25 minutes away in Shirley, NY while the main campus is located in Oakdale, NY. The main campus houses all administrative and financial facilities and controls your money! The School of Aviation requires all flight students to have an electronic account to monitor training status as well as your flight fees. DO NOT DEPOSIT MONEY WITH DOWLING! Once you place $500, $1,000, or any amount directed for your flight training, Financial Aid takes it out of your account and uses it for other expenses (dorm fees, activity fees, etc.) It is perhaps the most ridiculous and frustrating aspect of this school for flight students. My advice to you is PAY AS YOU GO! They discourage it, but I insist from personal experience to do so. If a flight lesson is $200, pay it immediately by cash or credit. It is so much easier and Oakdale can't steal your money!

FOR ALL STUDENTS CONSIDERING DOWLING COLLEGE!

Dowling College is a great place, despite its many drawbacks. Cell phone service does not exist in the dorms, so don't try calling mom and dad to talk. You'll have to walk outside or, as I did, hang out a window. The food is mediocre at best and the required $1200 food card per semester for residents goes pretty fast if you do not keep track. The food is expensive! ($6-$8 for a sandwich) Most of the students are ignorant and lack basic intelligence, so you don't have to be a genius to come here and spend close to $38,000 a year for the equivalent of community college education. Perhaps the only thing that keeps the school alive is its sport teams to which almost every student is a member. There is no social life outside of Oakdale or Shirley, so plan to ride the train, conveniently located in Oakdale to NYC for some fun. (Check out the Natural History Museum, still haven't finished it) There is a free shuttle service every half hour from each campus, depending on whether or not the driver feels like being prompt with the time, especially in poor weather. If you choose to come here, you'll make some great friends with the faculty who are the only positive thing abut this school besides the beauty at Oakdale Campus with the Connequot River. So enjoy Dowling College if you choose to attend, if you are an aviation student, stop on by! You will, for the most part, like it. If you are a business, art, education (any liberal arts) major, DO NOT waste your precious time or money here!
