The social structure of the school taught me a lot about American racism and classism. I had never interacted with core, upper middle class white people. I was astonished that they behaved so badly and thought so narrowly! The kind of behaviours I saw over and over from my fellow undergrads would have marked them as nothings in the black community I grew up in. The drunkenness, the mean-spiritedness, the arrogance, and the sense of entitlement was all too much for me! I was depressed for three years and found a way to get out for my fourth year, thank God.
