From its nondescript name, to its nondescript locale, ECU is a testament to what can go wrong when a regional university with no direction gains a small foothold in a remote area of a state. The most revolutionary attempt at legitimizing the university while I was there? Changing the school logos. I left as quick as I could. Honestly, there are two types of people who eagerly attend this university, local, wanna-be frat kids and right-wing conservative Christian types. There is no academic or intellectual ambiance here. There is just a Walmart. It amounts to a glorified high school for local students. It is the epitome of mediocrity. The professors are hamstrung by an uninspired, stifling administration. The campus, while not an eyesore, has the vivacity of a morgue. Most of the students are ignorant that a world outside of Oklahoma exists. The few that know better are exceptions for a reason. They are the only ones worth knowing and who make the most of what they are afforded. ECU is not completely hopeless but that is only because as a general rule worse institutions of higher learning have to exist. Nevertheless, ECU is a farce and in no way reflects what a true college experience is like (i.e. a time of growth). There is no coincidence that most of the residents in Ada are bigger fans of OU, OSU, and the local high school: ECU is nothing to be proud of. So unless you need the self-assuring, masturbatory joy of attending a college that reflects the worst parts of Oklahoma, then do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. Believe me, the ubiquitous Ada crackheads, close-minded jingoists, and shit-for-brains football players that call Ada home will be fine without you. |
