PROS

  • excellent curriculum structure. there are almost no required courses so you can cater your coursework to your interests.
  • excellent reputation
  • despite being known for sciences, there are some excellent departments in social sciences and humanities (poly-sci, economics, english)
  • there are graduate schools in medicine, business, education, etc that provide good connections
  • excellent music program through Eastman
  • campus is beautiful
  • the school is large enough that you can meet a new person every day, but small enough that youll see someone you know as you walk to every class
  • plenty of clubs to be a part of
  • good balance of academics and athletics for those on varsity sports. for the most part, school and classes come first. there are very few students who got in on athletics alone.
  • in general, everyone is smart!
  • the career center will continue to assist you, even years after your graduation
  • good alumni networking and events
  • very, very cheap off-campus housing available
  • excellent and beautiful library
  • big study-abroad culture
  • the big fraternity parties are very fun and open to anyone on campus
  • diverse campus relative to other colleges in upstate/western NY
  • it is easy to double major
  • you can take extra classes each semester at no additional cost
  • there is a take-5 program which allows you to stay on campus for a fifth year at no cost in order to pursue a one-year program of intellectual study
  • nice new gym
  • there are top-notch series on campus for visiting lecturers, writers, and researchers
  • students are generally happy and they remain friends long after graduation. this is perhaps the simplest but most telling testament to the school.
  • automatic scholarships for in-state residents and for students earning a minimum SAT score. (for those of you who have already been accepted but have not reached that score, pay money for a good course and tutor and take the SATs again. that investment will be well worth it if you can reach the minimum!)
  • CONS

  • ohhh the weather
  • there is not a strong academic advisor program. if you don't seek someone to guide you, it would be easy to haphazardly take random courses. even within your major, you need to seek help to make sure you are taking a strong foundation of courses.
  • likewise, you need to steer your own course in terms of internships and jobs. no one will encourage you to seek these things, and you really need to do it on your own. don't forget how crucial internships are!
  • socially it would be difficult if you are not in a fraternity/sorority or on an athletic team. unfortunately, they allow greek rush the first semester which means many students dont have the time to make non-greek friends before they are swept into greek life.
  • there are not certain creative departments like communications or design that would be beneficial, especially for a second major.
  • Rochester is fine, but it's not that big of a city. it might be beneficial to study in a bigger northeast city where there are more internships and jobs
  • the athletic program has lots of pros and cons. many of the coaches are sub-par, so be sure to check out your coach. squash and basketball are very good. soccer are baseball are decent. field hockey and track/field/crosscountry have weak coaches. football is a disaster- they are a huge drain on the budget, they do not perform well, and they provide some of the least intelligent students on campus.
