Each department is different, so remember that. Know why you are coming to SMU. I am in the engineering department, luckily. We just got a new building and so this department is trying many new ideas and ways to get students to be involved and creative and ready for the work-force. Because the department is very caring to the engineering students, I get a feeling that SMU cares that maybe someone in the English department would not feel. Also keep in mind that I am very active. If you stick your nose around and participate in things, you will find SMU has several opportunities to excel within the school, within dallas, and within the nation if you're so bold. Lots of people come to SMU to recruit for tutoring jobs, babysitting, etc. And if you make good grades, there are even more opportunities and scholarships available. All in all, this school is very good if you a) know why you are in college and have a vision/dream/etc b) know how to make good grades or are disciplined to figure it out I do suppose you can get these opportunities perhaps at a cheaper school. I think the point of SMU is that you meet really rich people along the way. Or maybe the school has some prestige. Its also nice to live in a beautiful looking place. If I could do it again, I would go to someplace other than SMU. I'd go to some place with a more developmental philosophy to college. SMU wants to be like the Texas Yale. They have a thing for over-achieving. I'd like a university that has a thing for helping the student grow at their own pace. But I'm stuck here. I'll graduate and get as much out of SMU as I can. I have no complaints here at Lyle (engineering school). I'm also studying philosophy and those professors are very good but if you're REALLY into philosophy, I suggest you go to UT-Austin, IMO. SMU is good, though. I also do math and the math department is okay. I can't speak for any other departments!
