Statistical Analyzer:

I was for the most part satisfied with my experience at UIC, especially in my Chemical Engineering major. The department is one of the smallest engineering departments but also the only one to have it's own building to itself and a dedicated lab. The professors in that department were usually easy to approach and had their offices right across the hall from the classrooms. The smaller size of the classes also helps the professors get to know you individually, but you have to actually interact with them if you want to stand out. Only a couple of them spoke less than perfect English. the senior design professor had his own consulting firm and brought a lot of much needed real-world perspective to our mostly theory-based coursework.

As for the rest of the school the experience was not as good. Many of the courses outside my major were in massive lecture halls where the professor doesn't know and doesn't care who any of his students are. I ran into more TAs there who didn't speak decent English but none of the professors had anything worse than a heavy accent.

Yes, it is a commuter school and that is one of the reasons I and many of my classmates chose it. A lot of us were older students with jobs who couldn't spend all day on campus even if we wanted to, but that still didn't stop us from organizing social events. There is also so much to do in downtown Chicago, that if you cannot find something to entertain yourself then you're not really trying. Same thing with friends, you can't just expect to sit in the same class with a bunch of people and get to know them by osmosis, you need to introduce yourself and talk to people!
