As a high school senior looking for a college to attend they fill your head with all the materialistic stuff the campus has to offer. Whereas the campus might be beautiful and catch your eye, do NOT be fooled. The saying to not judge a book by it's cover goes the same way when your looking at something beautiful and then realize it has no substance on the inside. As a communications major and freshmen at HPU this year I do not feel challenged at all except for one Biology course and have decided to transfer for Fall 2011. The courses are fairly easy, which leave way too much time for partying and other stuff that goes on from Wednesday night until Saturday night. There aren't many clubs to get involved in. They have an "Activities Fair" at the beginning of every semester, but it seems that after the fair is over the clubs are nowhere to be seen unless it is a Sorority or Fraternity. Being involved in Greek Life is the way you can have a social life here. The school also promises things like free shuttles to the airport during breaks on an hour basis…which ended up being shuttles provided only on the day of breaks and about an every 4-5 hour basis. They also pull out all the stops whenever there is an event like 'Family Weekend'. The food suddenly becomes more nutrient and bountiful and the kiosks on the way to classes stay open way later when they normally are only open until about 10AM. When you visit the school you are greeted by friendly people and are told that there are people from diverse cultures attending the school, but the school is about 75% caucasian and lacks social diversity and diversity in cultures. The school itself is located in a horrible part of North Carolina as well and there have been many occasions where you can see people running around with guns and there are crack houses located across the street from the campus. The social vibe on campus is disheartening due to the fact that most of the students are being funded through Mommy and Daddy's bank account and drive around their parents Benz's or BMW's. I believe that the school should focus more of it's huge donations towards funding for scholarships so that a more diverse group of students can attend, instead of building a whole new community and housing for Greek Life students. They also say that you have a "comprehensive fee", but don't be fooled. They give fines all the time and will somehow find ways to get even more money out of you. I believe that this school could have potential for greatness if they just toned down on the materialistic viewpoints and focused more on the substance of the education, academic supplies, and professors. |
