This schools is definitely not as strong as W&L or many of the small schools in Pennsylvania (Dickinson, Denison, Elizabethtown). That being said, you will be able to get a decent or even good education here depending on your major and effort and choice of professors. Professors are of varying quality and motivation. Some are quite good and others are abysmal. On average I would give the faculty quality a B-, so pretty good.Hampden-Sydney is an appropriate school wither for students from wealthy families who are not very smart (<1000 SATs) but still want to attend a decent school. It is also a good pick for above par but not excellent (1200-1450SATs) students because they may be able to secure a substantial scholarship to attend that they may not get at first tier colleges.A few words of warning on social life: Be prepared for an environment without many girls, even on the weekend, contrary to what you will be told by admissions staff. Also, this might go hand in hand with the first issue, the campus administration has been cracking down hard on partying and drinking. So the many open fraternity parties with lots of booze and girls are mostly a thing of the past. On that note, I advise any student to join a fraternity or at least another extracurricular organization. This is pretty much the only way to a decent social life. The college is very poorly run. The administrative staff is not very helpful and too many people are employed. I can see resources being wasted everywhere. In conclusion, this schools has some strong points such as lab programs and rhetoric requirements, but overall H-SC schould be a backup school for most. |
