First of all, Idk why ppl insist on calling it Akron University. It's called the University of Akron so for a student to not know that is beyond me. I enjoy most things about the university and always get annoyed when ppl just pass some stuff off as fact when it isn't. A strong majority of ppl do commute. However, it is by all means NEVER dead on the weekends. The weekends start on Thursday night and theres a shuttle bus (The Roo) to take you all over downtown so you can go clubbing, bar hopping, whatever. There's at least 3 night clubs (Vertigo, Lux and the Sky Lounge), not to mention a Bw3s, several bars, a hookah bar, lots of places to eat out and not just cheap fast food either. There are a few nice restaurants in the area too. There is always a frat party or a house party south of campus. If your not into that there is always some kind of an event at the EJ or the student Union, comedians, improv, hypnotists, magicians, music, dance parties, mixers, etc. There are also A TON of clubs you can join. The Ak-Rowdys are probably the biggest. They make it a point to go to as many of the games as possible and cheer as loud as possible and take stuff to the other team. Zpn is like a radio club and they also host lots of fun events. There is also a theater in the student union and there's usually something playing for free. Whoever says they go to the University of Akron and it's dead on the weekends is either misinformed or has no friends to hang out with.

As for the faculty, like any other college there are some good ones and some bad ones. I've had teachers who were rude and enjoyed making snide remarks to the class and making everyone's day hell and I've had teachers who are really nice and will help you with whatever you might be having trouble with in class. It just depends. However, I have been disappointed at times with my art teachers. Some of them are really nice and will help you when you ask for it and are open to all different types of artistic style, others don't explain things well or at all. I have had 2 teachers that graded my work poorly only because they didn't agree with the style or artistic opinion. I have been forced at times to recreate what the teacher has already seen and liked. I had 1 teacher tell me to my face that he graded me hard bc it was late at night and he was tired. However, he did regrade it after saying that. The worst teacher I had, I was forced to take her class by an advisor who said that all Summit College (one of the colleges at the University of Ak) students had to be placed in a small English class though I tested well in English and always got good grades in it. The woman was nice but she taught like a elementary school teacher. Once she saw that I had a brain and could properly write a college essay, she's pair me up during peer reviews with ppl who couldn't so I could help them. I basically paid money to help her tutor the class. Aside from those experiences, I haven't had much trouble. Again not all of my teachers were horrible, just those 3. I've had teachers give out their personal cell numbers just so they can answer students questions and help them get a better grade. If you're doing poorly in a class there are tutoring labs to help you. I knew a girl who was horrible in English and she went to the writing lab and they worked with her on her paper until it was right. What she had before she went in barely made sense and they do NOT write papers for anyone. They can only tell you what's wrong, make suggestions on how to fix it and correct it. The math labs have helped a lot of my friends pass their math classes.

As for safety issues, anytime you live near a college the crime rate will be high. I have been going here for 2 years now and I never heard of anyone being killed. I have heard about 1 or 2 shootings, 1 stabbing and countless robberies, most of them south of campus aka the south route. Sometimes it is bc ppl weren't being safe in the first place. Common sense tells us all to not leave our cars unlocked with a gps sitting on the dash, yet I c ppl do that. Ppl do the same with their apartments. This one kid left a window open, went home for Thanksgiving break and was surprised he got robbed. A good number of the crime that happens on campus is definitely avoidable.

Lastly, the students can be jerks. I casual "hi" to a stranger in passing will sometimes get a nice response or you'll get eye rolled at you or simply ignored. People are kind of rude at times wherever you go, here is no different. I've met some really nice outgoing ppl and Ive come across ppl who think they are elite and don't need any more friends.
