I am out of state, graduated with 4.6 on a 4.0 GPA scale, and was petrified of the stereotypes that SMU is plagued with when I first decided to attend. I am on a Hunt scholarship (2/3 of tuition) and do not care about/refuse to spend money on the latest designer fashions. After my first week at SMU, I realized that those stereotypes are completely ridiculous. Yes, you will notice that some people have money, but no one talks about it because it just isn't that rare or cool. It is not a focus at all. I am a proud owner of a ton of clothing from forever 21 and other inexpensive stores and have never once felt judged at all for my clothing. Simply, no one cares. Some of the wealthiest people I have met have been the most modest and friendly. Anyone flaunting money is just insecure and is an anomaly here at SMU. Also, since so many kids have such hard-working and successful parents, they strive to be just like them and have learned so much from them already before they even come to school. So please PLEASE do not let the fear of needing designer clothing dissuade you from coming here because it is completely falsified and you would be denying yourself a great opportunity for everything from a great/fun education to an amazing alumni network.

At SMU, you are so much more than just a number. My largest class had 100 kids and that was only because it was a general education course. All my other classes had about 20 kids and every teacher knew me personally. They are also always available for office hours and genuinely want to help. They are all extremely well educated and want to pass their knowledge onto you. I still go visit some of my old teachers and one even got me an internship over my winter break of my freshman year. SMU teachers are very well connected and will never treat you as just a number.

The campus and students are equally amazing. Not only is the campus aesthetically pleasing, but it is full of newly renovated facilities and top of the line resources. You will never feel like things are not kept up at this school. The students are also very driven and genuinely fun to be around. As a member of the business school and the honors program, I have loved debating and studying with my classmates. They are all willing to learn and have really big dreams for the future that they pursue wholeheartedly. Most had also been offered places at other highly regarded other schools, but chose SMU for its fantastic programs and opportunities. We are all very proud to be Mustangs and we WANT you to come on campus and let us show you around. I also LOVE the Southern hospitality around here. It is so fun and I have the best conversations with people I have never even met. Simply you can't beat it. SMU is the perfect size to where you still see your friends and friendly faces on campus, but you won't know everyone within the first month of being here. This school is full of amazingly smart and friendly students and faculty who are so proud to be associated with this school.

Not to be corny but iIf you take anything from my post, just remember, SMU is a place where you can be whoever you want to be. You can be a business scholar, an artist, a greek system member, a human rights activist, a sports star, a church leader, a scientist, or ANYTHING. Come to SMU and you'll find a great group of kids who you'll love
