OWU is a great small liberal arts college. If you are interested in the natual sciences, math/CS, Classics, English, this college can provide top notch education. Some of the departments like Economics, Psychology and some of the language ones are still great but the quality of teaching, student placements and faculty retention is not up to par with the rest of the OWU departments. Student placements in top graduate schools has been excellent in recent years. In a nutshell, OWU is what you make it: if you want to challenge yourself, there are definitely faculty who can provide the challenge and be an amazing support in the process. Word of Caution: Because of OWU's more liberal admissions rate but very tough academics, many unfit student get in and some drop out due to academic performance before graduation. In 2 years, many lose their merit scholarships (because it is tied to GPA requirements). And that's why you see many negative comments about the place from some bitter former student who happened to be among these. The story of these negative comments is always the same "I thought this place was great, I even got into Harvard but turned it down and then I am moving to a better school" when the real story is "I thought this place was great but I really came here for the scholarship, decided to party too much and my GPA went below 3.5. I was kicked out for academics and now I am bitter that I lost two years of my life here". |
