Because here is what they don't want you to know…that once you start as OUT-OF-STATE that is how you are going to stay. That whole domicile re-classification change is Bull S**t. The only way for your status to be changed is if they made a mistake from the beginning or if your parents have lived there for a year before you start attending. They even have a restriction on active duty military families. Qualifying for in state it is a headache. The law is subjective and when it comes down to it you have one impossible thing to prove once you start attending. They expect you to prove that you moved to VA for reasons other than school. Yeah, and everything you do once you start attending doesn?t matter. I bought a house and I am still fighting with these people. There are a couple things that the average person should know. 1) you need to live in VA for a year then apply to Mason 2) You need to work in VA and pay a whole year of taxes 3) register your car and attain a driver?s license 4) register to vote in VA 5) if you are under 24 you need to prove you are independent (if you still use your parents taxes to fill out the FAFSA then you HAVE to prove this) 6) Decide if you want to do all this and possibly more just to attend George Mason or any other out of state college. Because unless you are rich beyond belief. I think $13,272.00 a semester. $26,544 a year is way too much in comparison to 8,000 for the whole year. I really think is outrageous to pay that to attend Mason. GMU is a decent university but it?s not worth that kind of money. Every semester I have had a teacher I didn't feel was capable of teaching anything, so I would drop. However I still would be left with another idiot teacher. I have had like three teachers who have told me that they were not familiar with what they were teaching. The most important thing to take away is DO NOT START as an Out Of State student. Please take my advice. Do not allow Mason to rip you off by charging you 3times the amount. Because the state assumes that you only moved to VA to attend Mason. If this is what you want to do or intending to do then this really isn?t for you because that?s why they charge out of state. But for someone like me who moved to Virginia because it has a lot more opportunities for social interaction and I really liked the Northern Virginia area. For people who move and plan to stay in VA once you start attending everything that you do; you is because you attend GMU.
