However, i will be the first to admit that you will encounter some of the most amazing friends in your life. I became closer with my college friends then those I've known since birth. However, there are not many activities to participate in. The music program is horrible and is automatically a required 5 years (which always wound up being more), the upside to that is that many music majors receive some form of scholarship. You don't have to do anything to get into KState but apply and maybe pay an application fee. If you know someone attending the school, and they are really cool with some staff members they'll get them to waive your app fee. TRUST ME! If you're alive and eligible for Financial Aid, you're overqualified! LBVS. Its sad actually. They accept practically everyone cause its small and almost every year they overbook! I stayed in a hotel (really motel, Days Inn) the beginning of my first semester. It was fun but not my idea of college. And this past year, the students w/o dorms were just out of luck. They either found an affordable place (which is easy in Frankfort), stayed with someone and commuted, or went home disappointed. It was so out of control this year, that they were paying upperclassmen 4,200 to move off campus to make room for freshman. The housing situation is an awful factor in considering KStateThe NPHC Greek organizations pretty much determines the outcome of the school year. If the Frats/sorors are out on the yard, then the semester will more than likely go well. The campus is really scenic in the Fall/Summer semesters. Most dorms are decent sizes but some (Hunter, Chandler) are filthy. The Halls will be the best hangout spot for freshman. I didn't stay there but had a blast there my freshman year. I would recommend any males attending this school to strongly consider joining a fraternity. The day you cross, your social life will multiply times 100. Guys will all of a sudden befriend you, and every girl will be after you. even ones who rejected you before. Trust me Ive noticed the ugliest and biggest nerds life change after being initiated into Ques, Sigmas, and especially Kappas. They make girls go wild. Also, for females, the best sorority to join is Sigma Gamma Rho. They are very down to earth and and the perfect medium between the typical AKA's and Delta's. And there is Tau Beta Sigma (known as TBS) a music (primarily band) sorority who get a lot of respect. The AKA's are paper. If you plan on being mad, don't join. Delta's are always suspended and in trouble stay shy from them too and there diva-attitudes are prevalent. Also if plan on joining any of these organizations be prepared to dish out big bucks (1000's), go through life-altering processes, and have a cushioned GPA because your grades WILL drop. I have spoken to plenty of Greeks and they all admit there grades went down the semester they pledged. Aside from all the Greek life hysteria, the band is the life of the campus. The Might Marching Thorobreds (MMT) is trulythe best band in the landTheir motto. Joining the band however is just like joining a Greek organization (and they even have band/music organizations). The only difference is, it doesn't cost nearly as much. Learn "The Butt" quick its a KState staple. The football games are often half-filled because the team is absolutely horrible and NEVER wins. The basketball team are on a better level and intramural games are a great past time too. The fitness area is one of the worst I have ever seen. And that's an understatement. If you run Track, COME to KState!!! I cant advice it enough. The team members are very cool, nice people. And they are dynamic. Several are going to the 2012 Olympics and have stats that can be seen from a simple Google search. Plus they ALL have scholarships. They are always traveling and have solid fair GPA's. The girls Softball team is very similar to them except not all of them receive scholarships but most do.Don't stay in HUNTER! Worst dorm director. I recommend people against rules to stay in Combs (yet really nasty), McCullin Suites, or Kentucky. CHANDLER is disgusting, its an all girls dorm and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. New Young Suites is really nice and clean however, the dorm director is strict. The Halls is loud and rowdy yet fun. The bathrooms are by far the cleanest of all halls but everything else is nasty. You must have a 2.5 GPA to be considered to live there. Its quiet but there are ways of sneaking into the dorm w/o the dorm director knowing. Education wise, the curriculum is very outdated for your key courses. IGS is a waste of time but help out your GPA a lot because they are very easy. The Math dept is trash. There are NO solid math professors. And i most definitely not recommend it to anyone. The Business program is also very outdated. The classes need to be revamped and professors need to be fired. Assibey-Mensah, Obielodan, Smith, they're all terrible. It is truly a liberal arts school. (You're required to take about 75 liberal arts credits!). Its outrageous how many classes you have to take. No one hardly ever graduates in 4 years. Nursing program is good. One of the best. Its competitive to get into but the GPA requirement is far lower than most (2.5) to get into. Many other majors like Agriculture and Art are outdated and need to be updated if even kept. The staff is the worst. Everyone takes 6 personal 30 minute breaks a day and are often not present in the building. ASB, the building where you will take care of most of your business, is pandemic at the beginning of every semester. Hathaway is the best and most modern building. All in all, I am neutral on going to KState. If you don't enjoy dealing with loud, obnoxious, sometimes intimidating, predominantly black students stay away. The school is also undergoing a lot of changes with its diversity. The Korean population is growing rapidly. And Caucasians are too and they all eventually graduate with Honors, scholarships, and come to KState for Grad school for free. Because the good thing about KState is that academic excellence in Undergrad (3.0 and above) means an invitation from KState to attend grad school free of charge and since you'll live off-campus you'll get a huge refund check each semester. There are many schools better than KState especially since Frankfort is one of the most boring capitals int he nation, but it has it advantages. However, I would recommend giving it one full year and then transferring. I'm leaving. I have better opportunities going further south and the financial aid is terrible. They help students with GPA's below a 2.5 before they do those with academic excellence. And tuition rise astronomically for an outdated curriculum and degree that carries little to no power graduation from KState unless you withhold a 3.0 and above which most don't. |
