It is primarily white, and as an African American student, this can be somewhat weird. People who attend this college pride themselves on what they did in high school and thus the scholarship they received. Although these things do correlate when it comes to ones admission to Elmira College, it does not matter AT ALL when you are talking to a fellow student and you ignorantly ask "oh you're black? can't you not wash your hair in water? because of the texture?" Or when you waste the 50 grand your parents are paying for your tuition by sleeping, or ditching class. The social scene is ALL about getting black out drunk every weekend, if you're not a drinker don't worry there are actually people who don't drink or party…or have friends. So you can sit alone on your choice floor and…do…nothing? By the end of your first year the only thing that will bring you back are your friends. Although you will probably hate 99.9999% of the people who go here, the friends you did make will be the reason you commit to spending 50 grand here again, and again and again. The work is NOT hard. Freshmen writing sucks for a few weeks but then you should learn that you have to go to class, AND do the work. Once that's done you will be an A student. All in all Elmira is not for everyone, which is why only 1500 people go here. It is also not for people who like smooth surfaces to walk on, a warm climate or an academic challenge. If you want good grades, go here. If you want the an exceptionally high alcohol tolerance, agree to become a part of this wonderful college. Oh! And don't mess up and change your major half way through your junior year. Your class year is a HUGE part of life at Elmira. The '13s don't hang with the '14s who wouldn?t dream of hanging with the '12s or '11s. This also goes for people who want to graduate early, do not even dream of it. If you are admitted into the class of 2015 you will be a ?15 even if you graduate in 2014. Also, what you write on your roommate survey doesn?t matter at all. If you write that you don?t drink, or smoke or sleep with the TV on you can bet you?ll be placed with a student who binge drinks, chain smokes and cannot sleep without the TV. The only way to fix this problem is by taking matters into your own hands and moving all of your things to another room yourself. Don?t expect help from any RLCs or RAs. Elmira?s meal plan is also strange. Everyone gets the same amount of money at the beginning of each term and by the end of each term, the line of sweeny?s (the ?grocery store? in the campus center) is outrageous and not worth waiting in. People either end up giving their food away to other students or just letting the school take it back because left over money is NOT refundable. Elmira College takes some getting used to. The people who attend and graduate will not ever say they love it, or even like it. They come back because they like to party, and as I said already have made good friends. If you have some time and 50 grand to throw around, give Elmira a go! |
