MIIS does not tell its Translation and Interpretation students that their full-time employment options will be extremely limited and their entry salaries will be ridiculously low. The only way to really succeed financially with the MIIS T&I degree is to work for defense or similarly well-paying contracts, which are very hard to find and are frequently in very bad locations. The only other way to make decent money with this degree is to leave the direct field of interpretation and translation and become a manager over other interpreters and translators. Career Services for T&I are just horrible. They don't know the T&I field, give counterproductive advice, and ignore you after you graduate. For the kind of money I paid, I would have expected more attention and assistance. All in all, this is not a degree that I would consider worth all that money. Several of my current coworkers who make as much as me either do not have a language degree or do not even have a college degree at all. |
