I originally started my education at Bemidji with the intent of moving on after two years. I ended up staying for the full degree. Since then one son has also entered BSU and the other one is planning on attending as soon as he is out of high school. This school is very much like life - You get out of it what you put in. As an undergraduate I worked on four seperate research projects (two published, two not) that most underclassmen at other universities would have been happy to have seen one. Most of the professors are very easy to get ahold of and are more interested in their students success than in publishing. Putting the student first at a university was something I hadn't expected. Having the Dean of the English department teach freshman english was one of highlights I remember to this day. BSU is mostly a teaching college that practices what they teach. When taking calculus the instructor will probably spend as much time going over how to teach the subject as they do teaching the subject.Outside the classroom: Food - comparing the on-campus food here to three other universities, easily the best. Weather - Sept and Oct are great, Nov thru March are ccoollddddd (-40 for lows and days when it doesn't break zero are common), April and May are nice. Luckily most of the university is reachable by underground tunnels. Sports - hockey is king (this is Minnesota). In the course of the season you will usually see 3 of the top 10 teams in the nation come to town. Football (Div II) 500 seasons are the norm. Basketball, baseball, volleyball etc are also there. Outdoor activities are readily available and the norm, the latest dance routines and fancy drinking establishments, no.If I had to do it all over again I would return to BSU. |
