West Texas A&M has a few things going for it ( price, but this is quickly changing) but overall I feel I am getting cheated out of a good education. I am a transfer from a Community college and while it is better than cc of course it is frustrating when some of my 3000 level science classes are easier than Bio 101 at community college. Worse than that, the university as stated, has difficulty getting professors to teach all the classes I need to graduate. And the majority of the ones I am taking are all night classes once a week! I realize with the economy being the way it is that the average student can no longer afford college without working full time, but having only one section of a class 1 time a week for 4 hours is a poor way to try to learn the subject matter, especially if its science, and especially if you really need to know it well for a profession. Wt talks about personal attention, but from my experience, many of the classes are read the book followed by a test, or no book at all. If you think personal attention is being able to ask maybe one question in class, once a week be my guest…But the reality is the professors are crunched from research, graduate students, tight budgets and have very very limited officer hours. The Environmental science program at Wt asks for its students to "recruit" more students into the program, just so we can justify having another professor to teach the classes we need to graduate… on top of paying the bills. I know these are tough times, but that is inexcusable considering that we pay expecting to have the profs to teach us… and of course the cost is rising with a new 36 million dollar dorm being built in the near future. Take note that I can only really evaluate my program, and not others. I'm sure that Wt has some good programs, good students, and good faculty. However , my program (Environmental Science) seems lacking. The Intro Environmental Science course Isn't taken until the Junior, or in some cases Senior year, and isn't even a science majors course. Internships seem plentiful, but some of them will be things like installing septic-tanks with TCEQ, not the most exciting work. The professors that head the Environmental Science program are both very nice and reasonable men, and do some interesting, work. But, again I suspect the university drives them into the ground( being overworked). Other professors are hit or miss. Some are approaching retirement age, and you can tell are becoming less and less concerned with weather they do a good job or not. On a Bright note, I think there is opportunity here, and it really is up to you to do well within the confinements you are given within the University. If you really want to work in the Environmental Sector, you probably will be able to. They give out Osha certificates that help with employment along with other resume building opportunities . The program is much more geared toward Job placement, and less geared towards academia. And most likely it will be local Job placement, not national. Overall, I think the program is on life support, and that the university isn't necessarily concerned about it. But, again this is just my opinion. Personally, If I had more options I would look into those before coming to wt for this program, but If all you are concerned with is a job, and not the education then head on over! They will have no problem taking your money! O also, something really really should be down about the cafeteria food… If you want to become obese and diabetic then the cafe is the pace for you. Afterall, twice a day everyday it's Pizza, hamburgers and fries… pizza hamburgers and fries, pizza hamburgers and fries…
