When I inquired if I could go anyway, as I have never set foot on campus, I was told orientation was full and I would not require it. I went to the school and acquainted myself with the classrooms. I was never given a counselor. Everything that I did, including getting a parking permit I assumed on my own. Halfway through my first semester, a summer semester, I found I was not eligible for a loan or HOPE because I was only taking one class. At my previous school I had a team of counselors who ensured that I had no financial aid problems. I was treated very well and received a call at least once a month to make sure I was taking the correct steps so that I could continue being a student there. Because I was not aware of the rule about loans at KSU I had four days to come up with over 600 dollars. When I talked to someone over the phone about this they responded that I had been sent multiple emails on my KSU email account. I had never checked this account because at my previous school the email account was only for students and teachers to correspond. Also, KSU had contacted me numerous times on my personal email account so I assumed that I did not need the KSU email. Once again, a problem that could have been solved if KSU had given me a counselor. I came up with the money and enrolled for fall semester at KSU. As a non-traditional student, I work two jobs and am a wife and mother. At this point in time in my life I can only take two classes at once. However, I made sure I paid great attention to my financial aid for this semester. With the HOPE scholarship and my PELL grant I would need no loans. I went to the Registrar?s office and found my counselor for my degree. I set up an appointment with her, which was very unsatisfying. I dislike comparing KSU to my previous school however, my former counselor made sure I had all my classes set up for the next year, recommended professors, and set me up with tutoring for classes I thought I would have trouble with. This counselor gave me a list of classes I needed and sent me on my way. Undeterred, I went on with the semester and looked up my own classes and set up my own schedule for 2012. When the last drop-out date passed in October I received a letter in the mail. As of March of 2011, when the bill was signed into effect, I was no longer eligible for the HOPE scholarship. I owed over 800 dollars in the next 30 days. Even though this bill passed in March I was just finding out in October and the money that had already been awarded to me was being taken away in the middle of a semester after drop out date. I worried myself sick knowing I could not come up with the money this time and that dropping the classes after the drop out date would destroy my GPA. I went to the Bursar?s office and found I could still apply for loans to cover my fall and spring semesters. I was assured that they would receive the loan money in less than 30 days and no hold would be placed upon my account. I then web accepted the loans, even though I felt this was unfair. I chose those classes in August and was being told in October that I was no longer eligible even though the bill was passed in March. Weeks later I received a disbursement check in the mail that was for 995 dollars which I assumed was what was left over from my loan after Kennesaw had taken what they needed for the fall and spring semesters. I have only received money from schools before when they had used what was needed for tuition, which is the meaning of a disbursement check. I immediately sent the money back to the loan company to pay off whatever loans I had acquired. I finished my classes with all A?s and thought no more about my financial aid troubles. Then, as I check my KSU email account I received a message stating there was a hold on my account and giving me 5 days to come up with the 800 dollars again. For some reason, the university did not accept my loan for the fall semester and sent me the 995 dollars by mistake. When I went to financial aid and asked what I was supposed to do about this they asked me ?Didn?t you know that you had to pay for your fall semester? ? Yes, I did know that but I assumed KSU took the money out and sent me a disbursement check with the money they did not need. Even on the KSU websites it still states that I am receiving HOPE and my payments are all skewed showing I am in excess of 1200 dollars yet owe 800 dollars. |
