Parsons was my "dream school" and I simply could not wait to start classes. However that all changed after my first semester of the actual Parsons experience. I was expecting Parsons to be an academically challenging program filled with other creative intellectuals, but I found that there were kids in my photography classes who barely even knew how to use a digital camera, let alone a film camera. Maybe it is different in other majors, but I can say from first hand experience that the photography program is really not that great. Although I have done extremely well in all my classes, I have found that the professors are rather arrogant and condescending to most of the freshman here. You really have to push in order to get extra help. Perhaps the worst factor about Parsons is the other people who attend the school themselves. I am friends with a nice group of people, but I am not exaggerating when I say that EVERYONE who attends Parsons is a self-centered, arrogant, money/luxury-obsessed child. If you decide to go here you will find that most people are genuinely mean and stand-offish. Do not expect to make friends right away, unless you have these traits. However, I am sure that the kids at most art schools act this way, so being a snob is not just unique to Parsons. But if your heart is really set on coming here, you will find a group of nice, honest people… it will just be a little bit harder. All in all, Parsons was not at all what I expected. I do not feel like I have learned anything since I have been here, and besides my group of friends, the people here disgust me with their selfish immaturity. I will definitely be transferring next fall to major in something not art related at all. It is really very sad that Parsons has ruined art for me :/ Hopefully I will find it again one day. |
