I am originally from New York, but I chose Stephens because I have family near Columbia and I liked the school. I had to leave after a semester. I have never in my life heard such gratuitous use of the "n-word." I understand that some African Americans choose to use it as a reclamation of the word, but I have never in my life heard a white person use it towards someone of color until I went to Stephens. It was terrifying, especially coming from such a diverse and open-minded place. The rest of Columbia was WONDERFUL, so I'm not sure what's going on at Stephens, but it's simply unacceptable. It's the 21st century, not 1840. |
