I want to give a positive review of the school from the perspective of a second year, second semester student since most of the negative reviews are written by first year students. This school is completely based on self-motivation. You have to be a driven person to be able to plan your education here. A lot of students looking at schools tend to find a school with set majors so that everything is planned for you and it makes doing your work a little easier, however having free reign on your academic schedule can really make a huge difference in your art making processes.

I hated my very first semester here like a lot of freshmen adjusting to school do. I had trouble meeting people, I felt there was really no social life since living in the dorms is, well, hell in a way. Anyway that all went away during my second semester, something happened. The classes got harder which made me more motivated and I had some more control over my schedule. And by second year I was living off campus and having a great time socially and academically. My work load is very heavy this semester but it was the way that I arranged it. I am still taking the average 15 credits but I wanted to take harder classes and an extra studio because I found that that is how I work my best.

The resources at the school are wonderful. The print media department has new equipment, the woodshop is well stocked and their prices are reasonable. There are a lot of classrooms and faculty available which makes the classes a good size! Speaking of faculty, you can read StudentsReviews written for each teacher after each semester in the offices at the school. You will kind of realize who the good teachers are and the teachers that you wouldn?t work well with. Also when it comes to credit and no credit I have found that I am comfortable with it because it doesn?t allow for teachers to have biases. A teacher cannot give someone a higher grade because they like the person or the work more. Also I have had MANY fellow classmates fail my classes so this grading system does not make the school easier.

Anyway Chicago is a really wonderful city there is a lot to explore in the city, a lot more than what freshmen and visiting students are introduced to. Go explore the city. Go to Wicker Park or the MCA!

And in regards to transferring credits from this school if you decide you no longer want to attend SAIC I have known people that have gone to RISD and PRATT from here and Vice Versa. Credits are accepted and SAIC accepts them as well.
