I will admit that the school has some problems, the football team is not great and the 4 year graduation rate is low, but I still think that the states flagship university is doing quite well. After reading a lot of the complaints and advice about UNM, the biggest trend I am seeing is that people don't believe the education here is up satisfactory. I have to say that you really do get what you put into it. This is a very easy university to just coast at, and if you aren't interested in a career or higher education you can get by with a degree without really trying. That being said, if you actually want a higher education and apply yourself and put yourself through more rigorous classes then you will get the education that you are paying for. I spent my first two years getting by with easy intro classes and useless electives but after I realized that they were not going to help me with my career path I switched gears and put more work into the classes that were more rewarding. When I graduated from the University immediately got a job in my chosen career field and I started my own business on the side with a group of people that I worked with on a senior group project. My capstone class at the university was an advertising campaigns class that was a competition and led to me starting my own advertising agency. I truly have to thank my professors for helping me grow and network within the New Mexico advertising community. I have to thank one professor specifically because she is the reason that I have the job of my dreams and I am on my career path now. This University is not perfect. I have to admit that I thought very poorly of it when I started here because I thought it was too easy and too big. When I finally realized that I needed to take responsibility for my own education I began to see the possibilities at UNM. If you apply yourself here, you have a world of possibilities, but if you come here to be pampered and have a degree handed to you without working then that is all you're going to get. The advisers are there to make sure you get the degree you are after, but if you really want to challenge yourself and get an education then do some research, meet some professors, ask for help and find the classes that are going to make you work. |
