I came into CUA extremely open minded and optimistic, unfortunately i soon realized that i wasn't getting everything i was told that i would receive if i went to CUA's program. The School of Music is near broke money wise with facilities falling apart and being outdated. Its ridiculous to think this school cost nearly what an Ivy would cost ($50,000) yet you look around and see your classrooms and facilities majorly outdated! It may not seem like such a big deal to some to have the best facilities but at the end of the day it can really take a toll on your quality of education and learning experience. The performance spaces the school frequently used are falling apart and the departments are so underfunded that they frequently couldn't even afford microphones for the actors and performers! Majority of the faculty i found were terrible. Some of the new faculty members running the program are extremely close minded and don't seem to care for all their students and their development. Instead they usually stick with their favorite students while coldly ignoring the rest of the student body. The school in general seems to pride itself on past students success that happened years ago when different professors were teaching. The connections i felt were also lacking for a program that has been around for a long time. We rarely had masterclasses with professionals in the field which i feel are essential to you'r learning and career development in a Music Program. The school itself i found was not very diverse nor open to different theological and political beliefs. Im sure this was one of the reasons why majority of the students i knew, music and non music students transferred after freshman year. On a positive note i will say DC is an amazing college town and city offering a lot of diverse things to do. Other than that though i don't think i could've gotten through a year at this school without having DC as an outlet. At the end of the day this is just my experience and opinions. I am happy to say i am transferring to another University where i feel like my opportunities and training will be much better. CUA may be perfect for you, but for me it was not what i had hoped. |
