NJIT is a great school overall, but keep in mind it is NOT for everyone. This is by no means a party school first of all, so if that is what you're looking for then you are looking in the wrong place. This does not mean there is absolutely no way to have a social life here though! Rutgers is right across the street, so if you're looking for parties you can make friends there. If you're not into parties, there are tons of other ways to be social at NJIT. If you are a gamer or computer geek, you will fit right in automatically. But for those that aren't, do not let that discourage you. To be honest, not many colleges are as diverse as NJIT. You can find people from pretty much all types of cultures and backgrounds here, and I think that is a truly beautiful thing. If you're a little iffy about NJIT because it is in Newark, don't let that discourage you either! University Heights is a very safe neighborhood, and the are constantly police everywhere all over campus to ensure the student's safety. Trust me, I'm an extremely thin guy with no muscles, and I am still alive and have never had a bad experience when it comes to that. Some people complain that there's nothing to do around NJIT, but those are the people who do nothing around campus. There are tons of things to get involved in, you just need to make an effort. If you are planning to commute, don't be the person who just goes to school and goes straight home when classes are over. Trust me, you will be MISERABLE! I'm a commuter, and I made sure to get involved in at least 2 clubs, go to an athletic game here and there, attend events, etc. & I have had fun doing it so far! You will meet all types of people here, and everyone is friendly overall. The only thing is some people seem to be depressed often, but again those are the antisocial people who don't make an effort to enjoy their college experience! The workload is definitely tough. Don't come here thinking you will be able to bullshit your way through your classes because that will absolutely not work. You will need to put MUCH time and effort into your classes. So if you think you can't handle math and science, this is definitely not a place for you. The math department here is comparable to MIT and all of the other top notch engineering schools, so it will definitely be a change from high school, even if you have taken AP courses in high school. To be honest my recommendation is even if you got a four or five on AP calculus or AP physics, then you should still take the entry level courses and not exempt yourself, because trust me. You will want them! Without them you will suffer! I know other freshmen who started with calc 2 their first semester and had to drop the class because they could not keep up! So trust me, just start with calc 1 or precalc. You will thank yourself.
