I had high hopes and was extremely optimistic—A family friend told me I would love Omaha, it was a well-known school around my hometown, and everything about the school seemed to gel with meI was, after all, Catholic and not much of a drinker. The history program was supposedly very good, and a degree from Creighton was supposed to mean something. My first choice was out of reach, thanks to lack of financial aid, but Creighton had offered me quite a generous sum. I was so sure it would be the perfect fit.God, was I in for a rude awakening.Creighton turned out to be a huge mistake.The optimism I came to Creighton with quickly faded away after a month of residence. The students at Creighton are approachable and they are willing to help, but they won't let you into their circles. I lived on campus (I'm from SoCal) and it turned out to be an outright nightmare. People in my residence hall treated me like a pestilence since I didn't partake in their weekly parties or spend my week nursing a hangover. My roommate was an absolute nightmare and showed me little to no respect (my RA kept herself holed up in her room and didn't seem concerned with anything going on) and my floor mates were cruel to me. The only people who showed me any ounce of kindness were the Honors students and the Upperclassmen in Swanson and McGloin.I'm not much of a drinker, so that left me an outright outcast amongst Creighton students. Creighton touts their 'alcohol intolerant' atmosphere, but ignore it. They misadvertise—ALCOHOL IS PERVASIVE AT CREIGHTON. People got drunk weekly and I often couldn't get to sleep till a good 4 in the morning, only to find people hanging over the furniture, sick to their stomach the next morning. Creighton does have its CARE program where they'll send you to Creighton medical if they catch you intoxicated, but it's so randomly enforced that it's useless. Those so-called 'bag checks' everyone is so afraid of are easily avoidable (students transfer the alcohol to water or coke bottles, which the door people do not check).I enjoyed some of my classes at Creighton. My psychology lecture was FANTASTIC. It was the highlight of my entire week and the one class I was glad to get up for. My history class was rather disappointing, as was my philosophy class—The teachers were arrogant and cruel in their critique of students. One professor essentially told off a student because their laptop broke down the night before a test and they couldn't use it to type their in class essay. Another professor told a student he was baffled as to how my classmate made it into college with her writing skills. I was appalled. My math class was terrible, no one received above a C, I'm sure. Foreign language left something to be desired (I didn't feel challenged at all), but the professor knew what she was talking about and she taught clearly and concisely.Omaha is a quaint, small little town. If you're someone from a large city and you're looking for a school with that sort of large city vibe, then don't go here. If you don't mind a small town feel, then it's perfect for you. You can hang out and eat some pretty amazing food in the Old Market, and the zoo DEFINITELY deserves a visit. But it gets old pretty quick. If you don't have a car, it's impossible to get around or do anything. Omaha isn't terribly diverse either—a good deal of the general population is Caucasian (unless you count the Hawaiian population on campus), so you might feel a bit out of place if you're a minority or mixed, such as I am (and Creighton LOVES to remind their minority students that they ARE minorities). There isn't a whole lot to do, outside of that. I never felt unsafe ON campus. Public safety is always hanging about (I've seen them nab several people on campus, and they're quite effective at what they do). But if you wander off Creighton's campus, DO NOT do so alone at night. Creighton's in downtown Omaha, right near a homeless shelter and bordering the slightly undesirable South Omaha area where shootings happen often enough to warrant alarm. I give Creighton's counseling department an A+. They'll do whatever's in their power to help you. All you need to do is tell them what's wrong.I transferred out of Creighton after one semester, for my own mental health and physical well-being. I was much happier after I transferred into a school back in SoCal.Creighton isn't a TERRIBLE school. In fact, academically, it was quite enjoyable. It really wasn't the right fit for me, however.If you're looking for a school with a strong pre-med,pre-pharm, business, or law program in a small school in a small, sleepy little town, then Creighton's the way to go. Just make sure you're into Creighton's social atmosphere before you take the final leap.If you're like me, however, and you're looking for a school good in other subjects (music, law enforcement, or other majors), a lively city good to walk on foot, with a diverse social atmosphere, you'd probably be better off at some other school. Creighton's not for you. |
