The Corcoran recently was involved in big controversy over whether they would sell the historic landmark building, which they managed to save- unfortunately what they didn't deal with is the substance of the school. Do not go here if you are into painting, drawing, sculpture, illustration, or anything involving "making stuff". There are literally hundreds of better schools for that. Dont buy the hype about small classes. Here it is a nightmare because of how small the pool of staff is. There is almost zero diversity of opinion. Cult of personality swarms around certain students, and staff. This leads to a lot of people patting themselves on the back, and alot of subpar work being made. It is easy enough to be the big fish in a small fishbowl. Also the studio setup becomes a nightmare for fine arts students when one of the 30 or so kids has psychiatric issues, or serious substance abuse problems. Both of these problems occurred while I was there. It led to a miserable experience making stupid and extremely expensive projects, in an uncomfortable atmosphere, where the setting felt like that of a group home/mental hospital instead of an serious art school. Unfortunately most of the students have no frame of reference to compare against so they think everything is just awesome.I left for another school, and I can say with out any doubt the Corcoran is not a good school |
