The academics are pretty good here. There are no general learning prerequisites, for myself this was great because as a freshman it gave me a chance to explore my interests right away. Academic planning is a must if you plan on doing anything (academic) with your Evergreen degree, most programs have prerequisites for grad-school built into them but you can also take advantage of individual study contracts to get extra credit in a needed area. Grad-school is a common option for many after Evergreen, some also go into volunteer work. I would highly recommend going to the academic fairs and talking with the professors to get a feel for their specific program/class. You really can get liberal dollop of everything in your studies, being open and willing to explore learning in new areas will increase the awesomeness of your experience at Evergreen. Campus groups tend to have themes that revolve around ecological sustainability, social justice and/or spiritual awareness, becoming apart of them can help one to feel more connected to a community. Evergreen sorely lacks in a on-campus sense of "community", most events hosted on-campus are poorly attended and the student body, although highly diverse, seems more independent-focused. Many students transfer to Evergreen from other colleges. Evergreen has tendency to attract liberal thinkers from all around the country (as well as from Washington State): DC, Chicago,the Bay Area, LA to list a few common areas.The forest extending out behind campus is super awesome and beautiful, with plenty trails to explore. The forest is one my top favorite things about Evergreen. On the all too frequent overcast days the main campus' over abundance of grey concrete can be dull and unsatisfying. Lots of people smoke (in the designated areas) on campus and on stagnate days the air fills up with smell of burnt tobacco. As a city, Olympia has the prefect mix of small/funky downtown charm and suburban amenities. Riding the bus is free with your student id, 2 routes run pretty frequently from the college to the downtown (the ride takes about 20-30 mins. The routes also have grocery stores and the mall (both 15 mins away). That being said plenty of people ride bikes to and from campus, there are lanes all across the city. Since I both live, work and go to school on campus I prefer walking…but sometimes if I want to visit friends that live off campus I wish I had a bike. The weather is wet and not too cold(depending on what part of the country you come from). A waterproof jacket is a must and rain boots are good if you like to explore the outdoors. The music scene is pretty eclectic, there are always bands hosting showing on the weekends in town or on the Westside (of Olympia). |
