While Auburn University is an academically strong research university and probably the best in-state (Alabama) choice in universities, as an out-of-state student I could never recommend the school. The biggest, most glaring problem with Auburn is its campus life: the university is WHITE WASHED. Walking around campus feels like someone is in the midst of the Jim Crow era. The campus is 85% white. That's right, in today?s fully integrated society, the university is almost 90% white. Its not that there is a low level of diversity at the school, there is NONE. This is coming from a fellow white student from a large urban area in the southeast. It?s just surreal. As a result, the school is a microcosm for fundamentalist Christian ideology, tea-party politics, and out right racism. Once every other month you?re guaranteed to hear a preacher screaming at the top of his lungs on the Concourse about ?that Anti-Christ Obama? or ?a woman?s proper place in the home.? The N-word and the Confederate flag are a common place here, especially among the larger fraternities. This should come as no surprise, since the school is located in the state that celebrates Robert E. Lee Day the same day as MLK day. Now lets talk about the Greek Life. They say its members make up less than half of the student body, but no study actually believes them. Everyone is Greek. Therefore, everyone looks, thinks, acts, and actively discriminates against non-Greeks the same way. Simply put, if you are a student looking for any sort of university-sponsored position like being a tour-guide, go Greek or your application will be tossed. Merit means nothing in the selection process, only the letters on your baggy t-shirt.My only saving grace was the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. It is truly one of the best engineering educations in the southeast next to GT. But outside of COSAM, Engineering, and the Pharmacy school, this university is mediocre. There is an attitude of malaise about education to most students here. Many men here come to party for 4 years before they inherit their family?s business. Among women the phrase ?ring before spring? is a common more than common occurrence. If you want to be challenged academically in an environment that?s culturally eye opening, run fast and far. You?ll find nothing at this school other than what you?d expect from pretty much anywhere in Alabama. |
