Kutztown University is a place where good times go to die. The two largest groups in the student body are as follows, those who party every day, those who pride themselves on being clean cut. They obviously despise each other and are condescending and arrogant to those who don't follow their lifestyle. It's hard to make friends because social life on campus isn't all the different from what you'd expect at most high schools, cliquey and isolating. There is a large chunk of the student population that leaves on the weekends or just commutes to campus. I can't speak for everyone, but my personal reasons are a lack of friends and entertainment in Kutztown, and I suspect I'm not the only one who feels this way. The town its self is a dull place to exist. Almost everything that isn't residential is on main street and there isn't all that much on it. There are some low quality restaurants (I had my food stolen off the table at Uncle Joe's in plain view of the staff), some pubs, and a thrift shop and record shop that are polluted with hipsters who think they're better than you because they listen to Miles Davis and smoke hookah. If you're a party person, beware, the pigs are always out in force and you'll have to wander the streets aimlessly unless you're in a frat. If you're not a party person, your chances of being harassed by a drunk go up significantly at night. All in all, the town is boring unless you live a greek life, so you'll probably want to have a car if you live here.The professors aren't that great either. KU offers D2L to all students and professors, a service that allows students to complete assignments and view power points and for professors to keep their students up to date. However, most professors don't use this service, and to add insult to injury, many professors have you PAY (anywhere from $80-$200) for an ebook or online code so that you use a payed service that does the exact same thing as d2l. Furthermore, some professors have you buy scantrons to take their tests and clickers to take attendance. As for their knowledge and personalities it can be hit or miss, but that seems less important when I have to open my wallet just to have a chance of passing in the first place.The food on campus at Kutztown is subpar. The buffet only serves hot food for small amount of time during the day, so if you want a hot meal you'll have to go else where most of the time. The KU meal plan has the value of a meal set at $4.95, but what most people would consider a meal is more expensive than this. For instance, a burger from The Grill (no there isn't anything special about it) is around $5.79.The meal plan should more appropriately be called the snack plan, because if you want to get sizeable hot meal outside of the buffet's limited hours, you'll need to pay some FLEX. FLEX is money that can only be spent on food via your student id.Conclusion: KU is an ugly place that hides behind a nice looking campus. I don't plan on returning here next semester. |
