The cyberbullying at this school is out of control. Coupled with the fact it is such a small school just compounds the effects. People gang up and bully people openly on facebook and its almost as if people endorse it because students join in. Whats most ridiculous is the use of the anonymous social app yik yak. Bullying happens there…expected BUT the most ridiculous part is UMW students actually BELIEVE what it written there as fact. The rumor mill here is insane. The fact that there is nothing to do on campus doesnt help. If anyone says there is a social life here, they are trolling you or they havent been to a real college. The social life is a step above Highschool, Ill give it that; mom and dad arent present. Other than that, the social life here is miserable. The administration likes to show off only the few fancy new buildings. Some which werent built all that well. for example the new convergence center which someone posted videos/pix of leaking pipes in several rooms flooding the sections. The school, as already noted in a review, sacrificed quality for speed so they could attract more students. As is, they already have to do NATIONAL advertising just to fill enough seats to fill their freshman class and to compensate for the inevitable ~30% that will drop out or transfer.In more recent news, there was a suicde. Im not sure the cause, but I wont rule out depression (a given) but possibly bullying (which wouldnt surprise me given this schools culture). UMW's president endorsed UMW divest, the student majority pushed for divest and the BOV ignored their voice. The president then when on to say something like he doesnt represent the students, but the BOV pays his salary, and he no longer supports Divest or something. Follow UMW divest for correct more accurate info, i dont follow it too much but it just comes to show the school likes to SAY it gives voice to students but really…they dont. If you come to this school and you end up hating it…there is no one to blame but yourself. So many reviews have warned you about this bs fake school. Between the divest controversy, the rugby team getting suspended indefinitely for singing a song about raping women (google UMW rugby rape song), suicide, ignoring the student voice, budget cuts, cyber bullying,increasing trasfer/drop out rates and whatever else im missing. Id say this school is going downhill fast and will be the next sweet briar college. For those of you who dont know, SBC closed. Also, much love for UMW trying to take the homeless SBC students "seamlessly" as state…UMW really needs as many students in can get (need dat tuition money). What a PR scam. |
