First off, do not believe comments that say Juniata is not a place full of helpful and intelligent faculty. I have spent one year on campus, and I have loved every professor I have had, and my advisors have been accessible and friendly. Most professors truly want to see their students grow and be successful, and the small class sizes gives every student chances to have a voice. However, Juniata has a number of negative aspects that the school does a great job at dodging on their website, campus visits, and during orientation. Not saying that any institution has reached perfection, but some of these quirks would certainly make or break a student's decision to attend Juniata and bringing them to light is only fair. Central PA can be beautiful, and the small campus and surrounding area has a number of areas to hike and the near by Raystown Lake. However, regardless of how much you appreciate the landscape and enjoy spending time in nature, it is no question that it can be isolating. Without having a car on campus, there is no way to reach any of these areas without hours of walking. Huntingdon as a town is also strange for students that do not live in Central Pa, or other super rural areas. The majority of the residents are friendly to the students, but it is no question that the town is a finically depressed place to live. The stores downtown close early and are not even open often on the weekends. This is not to say there are not a number of gems in town, I loved eating at Stone Town Gallery and Boxers is also a town classic. I would encourage any student to serious consider the school's location as a crucial decision piece, because personally, Juniata was the perfect academic choice for me, but I could not see myself in Central PA for the duration of undergrad. When I made the decision to attend, I did not think the town and surrounding area would be that important in the long run, but have realized through this year that location is the most important for me. The lack of options off campus does affect the student life tremendously. I always found it odd that it is rare to see students strolling around downtown or spending much time off campus other than to eat on the weekends. This also affects the weekend atmosphere. Because there is no Greek life, I would not say that the school could be considered a major party school, but the majority of the students choose to drink on the weekends. Weekends got miserable quickly; other than doing homework, or having movie nights, there are not many other options if you are not into drinking. Food is not the worst, the dorms are fairly older, (besides the new single dorms they just built).Juniata is a great fit for many students, I have met more people that could not imagine attending undergrad anywhere else; but the negatives are essential to note before committing because they will make or break your experience. |
