After three years at the LCAD Game Art program, I have finally decided to cut my losses and move onto a better program elsewhere. The education I got here was a sham, and that's coming from someone actively on the dean's list. The studios are all dark hovels where students come and go. It is not a welcoming and warm place by any stretch of the imagination. The students are all overworked and desperately self absorbed, as is common in Orange County. The Animation and Design students seemed friendly, but the Game Art students were anxious, brooding, misanthropes who frankly were some of the most off putting people I've ever met. The professors are jaded beyond measure, and routinely reminded us that we would just be cogs in a corporate game making machine. Many of my professors could barely spell correctly - numerous typos and extremely corporate design philosophies were rampant in their lectures. Many of the professors were under 30, and completely unqualified for their positions. I could go on, but I believe the disastrous retention rate speaks well enough for me. I single handedly watched dozens of my peers drop out of the program - of the hundred students accepted, only 8 are expected to graduate. They will tell you that it's because their program is competitive. The reality is that the education is a joke and the environment is discouraging beyond measure. If you have any respect for yourself and your future career, you will stay away from this utter failure of an institution. |
