Do not come to UTHSCSA nursing school!! The Student Success Center staff is truly wonderful,as is the counseling center, the Gold's Gym on campus you are forced to pay for, and the connections it provides at local hospitals. But this doesn't make up for the fact that theory professors are disorganized, frequently distributing vital information hours before an exam, posting incorrect versions of study materials including readings and PowerPoints. Many are selective about which student emails they answer, and do not offer statistical analysis of exam questions missed- which is HUGE when this information will affect your professional practice. It often feels like the professors WANT you to fail. I have had to fight tooth and nail for grades, which is ridiculous…faculty should be helping you succeed, especially since there is a nursing shortage. Clinical professors are on the whole more friendly than their theory counterparts, but they are not consistently adherent to the rules, which results in a WIDE variety of clinical experiences for the students. An example here is some professors assign one unit for the entire semester while others allow the students to self select or float around to take in many different settings in the same amount of time. Some professors require abundant paperwork while others are satisfied with verbal debriefs. None of this is made known prior to actually beginning the semester, and many student have expressed a desire to know this type of information in advance as it would affect their registration/hospital choice. Overall, I did not feel valued as an undergraduate RN BSN student, especially since I am civilian with no military experience- there is a large contingency of students and faculty that represent the military, which would be wonderful except for the blatant and rampant favoritism. If I could do it all over, I would rather go to school online- not at all conducive to my personal learning style- than repeat my experience at UTHSCSA/UT Health SON.
