Overall, Geneseo is the right school for the right type of person but it is definitely not for everybody. As far as academics go, they are very good and quite rigorous. This is a good and a bad thing, it does have a good reputation within the SUNY system, however you will have to work a lot harder here to achieve a decent GPA than most other SUNY schools. You should take this into consideration before going here, since getting a lower GPA at Geneseo wouldn't look as good as getting a higher one from other SUNY schools such as New Paltz or Oneonta (still very good schools, only a small step down from Geneseo). The campus is pretty nice but is always under construction with at least some part of the campus closed off. Socially, if you are not a part of greek life or a sports team you will find yourself sitting alone in your room on the weekends. Since the statesman and just about every other club/bar in Geneseo closed it seems as though everyone's social life is forced to rely on fraternities and sororities, which if you are not a part of you will very rarely be able to get into parties. Since, most parties are so exclusive and closed, this leads to many people rushing frats and sororities which both haze very heavily. Because of this, Geneseo seems to be attracting a lot more straight edge kids who are going to college solely for the education which is fine but i've never met such a large portion of people that have never drank in their lives- probably about 70% of the people i've met are like this, again not a bad thing just not normal for a 4 year college. As far as making friends here, it is surprisingly difficult if you are not on a sports team or in greek life. As a previous reviewer mentioned, i've noticed that a lot of people come to Geneseo with their high school friends and pretty much have no intentions of making other friends and seem to exclude anyone who reaches out to them. A lot of students also seem very fake and really stuck up/close-minded, obviously people are like this everywhere but the amount of people that i've met that have fit this stereotype is quite shocking, it could be an elitist type attitude since a lot of these people think they go to some kind of ivy-league school. There are some nice people here but they are far outnumbered by a frightening amount of people that just straight up aren't very nice. Overall, if you live near Geneseo and are looking to get a solid education then it's very good for that but if you are someone who would be coming here from more than a few hours away and are really trying to get a typical and enjoyable college experience then I would look elsewhere (unless you are on a sports team or fully intend on joining greek life). Personally, I will be transferring after my first year to a slightly lower ranked school but my social life and sanity is more important than spending another 3 years here.
