The acceptance rate at OU is high, but retention rate is low because of how difficult the courses actually are and because some people really hate how small the school is. One of my best friends freshman year came into Oglethorpe thinking that she could slack off like she did in high school and she ended up being expelled from the university due to academics. This being said, the required GPA is only a 2.0. Social atmosphere: It is truly identical to high school, only you're required to live there for 3 years. This can be a great thing and it can be a horrible thing depending on what you make it. Find a group of good friends and explore Atlanta with them. The school itself is small but it's in an extremely nice area of Atlanta. That being said, there are always events with free food/t-shirts on campus so take advantage of them! We had karaoke nights and a foam party last year, to name a few. It's lit. Be aware of Greek life. I was a member of a chapter, had an executive position, and was shunned by my organization because of a particularly difficult time I was having at that point in life. I left the chapter. Most people are still very friendly but don't trust them too much.Academics: If you want to go here, you must have an appreciation of the Core program, otherwise, you will not enjoy Oglethorpe. Professors are always very qualified for their positions because it's very competitive to get a job at Oglethorpe (ATL is a sought-after place), but good luck in the chemistry department. A liberal arts degree is highly valued and Oglethorpe's Core program will teach you to write like a pro, which so many Oglethorpe graduates have gone on to say how much it helped put them at an advantage over Tech and Emory students in graduate school. |
