If you are a serious choral conducting student who is looking for a graduate program, look elsewhere. UNR has the perfect environment for nurturing and supporting students who might not have an opportunity to get into larger, more prestigious schools. They could be an innovative program and environment that actually focuses on teaching music almost like an apprenticeship. They aren't and they don't. The majority of the faculty are at UNR because it was their last choice. Not all, but most. Now they are big fish in a little pond who are stroking their own egos and couldn't care less about their students. Graduate music history was a farce. It was all about dismantling the concept of music history as we know it because it was written by educated western Europeans. Of course it was! They had the background and ability to write it. Were they biased? Of course they were. Every writer is biased. There was no real opportunity to learn what one needs to know in order to progress in his or her field, in this case choral conducting, because so much time was spent trying to create a corrective for the context of music history as we now know it. It was an utter waste of time and money. The director of choral studies teaches conducting as well. Don't bother with this fellow either because he couldn't even be bothered to write a syllabus for any of his courses. He hid his laziness behind the pretext of "preparing students for post-graduate work" and independence. What a crock! This is not a viable graduate music program if you wish to do anything outside of Reno or Carson City after you finish.
