RCC has a reputation for being difficult and for adequately preparing their students to be nurses, with that reputation though comes ego from many people who work there. They have the mindset that because something is always done this way, that is the way it should be. The nurses there are not educators they are nurses! They are very knowledgable in their fields but are not skilled at teaching. I've had 2 professors in the nursing program out of 10 who I can say actually taught. Although they verbally encourage questions they do not foster a safe open environment to ask them. The nursing professors are often very defensive even if you ask a question during your exam review time. I had a professor kick me out of the exam review claiming my time was up because she was so defensive about 1 question I asked! Instead of providing appropriate rationales to questions, the mindset is you're wrong because I said so. Anyone interested in the RCC nursing program should learn stress-relieving techniques because this program I think unnessciarily promotes a lot of unnecessary stress. On the other hand I think everyone can say the program is affordable, the clinical lab staff there is amazing. I feel very prepared to join the nursing profession. I also feel the entire program needs a cultural cleansing. There are a lot of old-schoolers with nasty personalities and giant egos. Most staff there have we vs them (professors vs students) mentality. My overall recommendation to people who ask me if they should go to the RCC school of nursing is to go for it. You should avoid needing assistance or clarification from staff members, avoid making any errors and find 2 -3 dependable students to form a support group with! If not you'll become unhappy very quickly!
