I am an associate of science in nursing graduate from St Kate's University. I was supposed to graduate in 2013, but I had to repeat my final clinical because my clinical instructor treated me unfairly. I also had to pay full tuition for the course despite only having to attend the clinical portion. It is my opinion that this instructor decided that I was going to fail the clinical even before the clinical started based on a reaction she had to an urban slang term that I had used during orientation. This instructor stewed over this for a week and interrogated me about it on the first day of the clinical. Then, she would tell me that when I rated my professionalism as 5/5 that I "wasn't taking the self-evaluation seriously" and told me after every clinical day that I said something offensive to the patient. I believed her at first, but when it was happening over and over again, I started to have doubts—or at least thought she was probably exaggerating. This particular clinical instructor is well-loved by other students but she singled me out. I felt that I was unable to complain at the time because the other instructors would side with her instead of me, and that I did not wish to jeopardize my chance of re-sequencing into the program. Mostly I feel that my education was high quality, but years have passed and I have not been able to let go of the anger I feel towards this instructor. Also, she told me "I have to believe in my heart that you are safe to practice nursing" (that is what the NCLEX is for) so obviously she doesn't understand her role.
