The nursing faculty cannot wait to be rid of our RN cohort. We have been significantly impacted by COVID-19. We spent 1.5 of the 2 years in our degree doing online lectures and exams, with in-person clinicals. We?ve been dealt a shitty hand because often the teachers aren?t reachable and the lectures don?t always cover all the material we see on the exams. We have had to teach ourselves almost everything we?ve been tested over for the last 3 semesters. All the surrounding universities are allowing in-person pinning ceremonies and yet our school has decided that our safety is oh so much more important than allowing students to get together and celebrate the fucking blood sweat and tears they?ve put into making it to graduation. Oh but athletics? You bet your bottom dollar they?re up and operational. After being repeatedly ignored or vaguely responded to by our instructors and program directors to have an in-person pinning ceremony, both the day and evening cohorts signed a petition and sent it to the campus president, Dr. Blondin, who gave us a vague, generic, and thinly veiled ?fuck you it isn?t happening? response. Why? Well, my guess is that the school has caught on to the fact that it?s way cheaper to do everything online than it is to have to pay utility, housekeeping, setup and tear down, additional wages, supplies, and other materials to do anything in-person on a semi-larger scale.

So fuck you, Clark State, and especially fuck you Clark State Nursing Directors. Your arrogant dismissal of legitimate concerns and suggestions tells us that you never really cared about us, you only care about pushing us through and obtaining good numbers that you can post on the program page of the website to entice new students to stupidly choose you in their nursing school aspirations. So sorry we want to hold our instructors accountable and be properly recognized for the ridiculous amount of work we?ve had to put in to get to where we are now.

Oh and also, the news that you?re reducing program entry requirements is mind-blowing. No more microbiology? What the fuck is wrong with you? This class is absolutely vital in understanding how viruses and bacterias can grow and spread, how do many things we come into contact with are covered in contaminants, and what we can do to mitigate the spreading of various microorganisms. And you want to remove it from the curriculum? That?s absolutely the stupidest thing you can possibly do. Let?s create dumber nurses, yes? How about keeping the classes that BSN programs typically require for entry into their programs? The fact that there isn?t a human nutrition course for nursing, and chemistry isn?t required, is a big block to students wanting to transfer to a BSN program. Most programs require you have chemistry to even enter, which means we have to spend additional time and money completing those courses and interrupt our nursing school progress because it wasn?t required earlier on in our associates program. Get with the program. There are so many things you can do to improve student outcome and increase the quality of the education you provide. Listen to your students and value their input because it?s ultimately them that will affect how many prospective students you?ll get.
